About Oslo

Oslo is the capital of Norway and the largest city in the country with over 600,000 inhabitants. It covers 454 square kilometers and more than a half are forests, making it a truly green city with many outdoor recreation opportunities.

The city was founded in 1048 by king Herald Hardråde and became the capital of Norway around 1300, but during the union with Denmark (1348-1814) it lost this statute. In 1925 it regained its original name, Oslo. The city is the cultural, scientific, governmental and economic centre of Norway and an important centre for maritime trade in Europe. The metropolitan area of Oslo has a population of approximately 1.4 million and more than 150,000 immigrants which makes it a highly culturally and ethnically diverse city.
